Feeling Feedly

I've got a bit behind due to moving apartments over the last week, leading to everyone's greatest fear: being without internet for several days! But we are all set up with new dataplan and my little 'study nook' is now getting bit more use. I wrote this one before we moved, but only posted about microblogging, so here are my experiences using a couple of RSS readers.

I never really saw the point of using RSS feeds, as I had already amassed a large list of bookmarks for my favourite sites and would pick and choose where I wanted to go, so I missed out on all the distress and outrage caused by Google when they canned their popular Google Reader (for no apparent reason, and everyone was very upset). Luckily this means there are plenty of reviews of alternatives so I could have a look at some comparisons others had done.
I added Sage, a free extension for Firefox, so I revisited it and I found it actually works really well. It is pretty basic, you just download and the add-on and it appears as a little leaf icon at the top of the browser. If I want to add a blog RSS to Sage, click the button and Sage opens as a sidebar. It's very clean and simple looking, which I like. I can find the RSS feed and add it, choosing how to organise it afterwards. It seems very straightforward, but since it is still just on my browser on my laptop I don’t know if it adds any more value to my life than just using bookmarks.
Feedly requires nothing more than going to their site, and logging in using a number of different options (Yahoo, Facebook, Google, Twitter…) I logged into Feedly using my google log in.
It is really easy to use. I searched for each blog using the URL, and then hit +feedly button to add it to my feed. I was also able to set up and easily add feeds to a collection to keep everything in order. I like that I can access feedly from various devices if I wanted to, so I tried accessing it from my iphone and that worked as well.
I’m not sure if this is something I will keep using, but I will have a go at using it for personal reading. I think I prefer Feedly as I could use it over multiple devices, however at the moment I don’t really need to have access to my bookmarks from my phone or my work computer.
