Librarians Empower

I was interested to read this post by Roy Tennant, on The Digital Shift on changing the mission statement in libraries. He talks about how it is now the mission of librarians, not libraries to empower “individuals, organizations, communities, society” with access to knowledge, networks and skill development. I related to this, as we were reflecting last week in our class about the need for librarians to be their own advocates. This reinforces the idea of the librarian, rather than the books or Google being the critical difference in people’s ability to successfully access information. I also like the idea of librarians as being more flexible than the library itself, as we are able to more quickly adapt to our user’s needs. It is hard (and expensive) to change a physical space, but librarians can easily learn new skills and respond to a changing community in new ways.

  2. I really like that view of librarians as well. I think that people can gain so much more from an interaction with a person than with a computer system. Especially when it come to research having someone else bounce ideas around with you can lead to wonderful discoveries.

  3. Hi Anna, I'm so glad this link is working now, that post was very... empowering! It is exciting to think about how libraries (and therefore librarians) are going to evolve over the next couple of decades. We have the power and will be part of that process.
