I set up a Twitter account a long time ago, so that I could
keep in touch with a friend who was leaving Facebook due to data privacy
concerns. I found it to be a very easy to navigate platform, and started
following people of interest to me including friends, media and political
figures, and craft bloggers. While I lived in Tokyo, it was useful for me to
follow some people who tweeted about great restaurants, news and events in
English so that I could get some good tips on places to go.
But... I never once tweeted myself, content to passively
follow others and see what was happening in the work.
In the interests of jumping into online community participation, I made
my very first tweet the evening before our second Document Management class
(where we learned about using Twitter). I sent a picture of my new sewing
machine, vintage from the late 50s, to a retro sewing blog
I follow. I was delighted to see them share it with their other followers, and
people retweet it, so I could see the process in action.
In class the next day, we found ourselves using the hashtag
#isys1166 to comment on the class, retweeting the tutor and each other. I
missed the lecture, so tried to livetweet while watching the video this morning
but I found I needed to concentrate as it was pretty technical! I ended up having to rewind the bits I missed as I was busy tweeting. Perhaps when I am more used to it, I will be able to multitask a bit better.
This is all surprisingly fun and I think I will be using
Twitter more and more regularly both for class and for personal interests. I am
following lots of classmates, and found some interesting feeds to follow by
seeing others’ retweets. I am enjoying the more casual interactions with
classmates and tutors, and seeing more and more library-related stuff coming
through as we all get a bit more comfortable in our new environment!

Welcome to the wonderful world of proactive twitter use! I too had a twitter account for some time and have used it irregularly. To my mind one of the essentially elements to twitter's success is its social nature. One of the reasons I discontinued my use was because I did not feel engaged with it. None of my friends were on Twitter so it didn't really matter if I used it or not. However using it as part of this class has been amazing. It has encouraged our communication as a group and allowed everyone to assist each others learning experience.
ReplyDeleteYay for Twitter #isys1166
Hello Anna! I agree with you, using Twitter has been rather fun, hasn't it? I was completely skeptical at first though! I've never had a Twitter account until now and was convinced that I would never have one... I'm glad I have one now though. I have followed many classmates as well as some great Information Management Twitter accounts and, of course, other things I find interesting. I must admit that I feel like I have become part of a community of Information Managers and am connected to the Information Management world. Tweeting during class didn't work for me either! I definitely can't multi-task and concentrate on doing two things at once! Hopefully we'll get better with practice!
ReplyDeleteKeep Tweeting :)
I had never used twitter before this class, and I have to admit I have not been tweeting as much as I should have so far! I will be changing that in the next couple of weeks, we should all have a tweet off in Docman tutorial...
